Statement on the recent ruling of the United States Supreme Court granting authority to Texas to enforce SB4
The recent Supreme Court ruling granting Texas the authority to temporarily enforce SB4, a contentious immigration law empowering state officials to arrest and detain individuals suspected of unauthorized entry into the United States, has sparked grave concern within the El Paso Community.
“We are at an urgent and challenging moment in the defense of the rights and dignity of vulnerable persons on the move,” Most Rev. Bishop Mark Seitz, Bishop of El Paso said. “Recent events in El Paso, as well as throughout the country also raise the specter of the criminalization of humanitarian aid to migrants and troubling threats to religious liberties enshrined in the First Amendment. These realities call us to prayerfully reflect and consider the requirements of a faith which calls us to respect the inalienable dignity of every human being as well as the imperative to reimagine ways of effectively collaborating to build a society that welcomes, protects, integrates and promotes our sisters and brothers who migrate, and to do so together with them,” he added.
In response to this ruling, the recent threats against Annunciation House and to prayerfully remember the anniversary of the fire which killed 44 detainees in a migrant detention center in Cd. Juarez, the Diocese of El Paso, in union with the leadership of other religious bodies are hosting ‘Do Not Be Afraid’: A March & Vigil for Human Dignity, on the evening of March 21st. The March will begin with a gathering at San Jacinto Plaza (114 W Mills Ave, El Paso) at 6.30 pm and will continue to Sacred Heart Church (602 S Oregon St, El Paso), the site of an Interfaith Vigil.
