 Mission Ysleta was established in 1680, with the first Mass being celebrated on October 12th, 1680. The first permanent structure of the mission was completed in 1682 and dedicated on October 19th, the Spanish named the new structure Mision de Corpus Christi de la Ysleta del Sur. Also known as Mision de San Antonio, in honor of the patron saint of the Tigua indians. In 1740, the Rio Grande waters washed it away Settlers began construction of the new structure in 1744. The parish name was changed by French diocesan clergy who served here from the 1850s til the 1870s. Jesuits served the community for 100 years from the 1880s. Franciscan friars returned in 1991. |
