On Easter sunday of the Year 1952 a handful of Catholics gathered at a nearby fire station on shortly Lane to celebrate their first mass. Later near 20 families used a small house on Emory Way for mass and religious instruction. On December 1, 1955 the mission was raised to the status of a parish. The first pastor was Rev John P. Linane. The name of the parish was Holy Apostles. This name was later changed to St. Matthew the Evangelist Parish. Bishop Sidney M Metzger named the Rev. James E. Payne as it second pastor on July 24, 1958 and gave permission for a new structure to be built on its present site of 400 Sunset Road. A new religious formation center was built on 2004, Bishop Armando X. Ochoa blessed it on February 22, 2004. The parish has grown to 1,045 families.
