The Idea for building the church began in 1913. On February 27, 1914 a deed was filed for the purchase of the property on the corner of Mesa and Arizona for a price of $20,000. On April 3, 1914 word was received that the El Paso area was to be split-off from the Diocese of Dallas and that a new Diocese of El Paso was to be formed. On April 7, 1914 ground was broken for the new church and the estimate cost was $150,000. On October 28, 1915 Anthony J. Shuller, was concecrated as the First Bishop of El Paso, and he designated the new church under construction to be his cathedral. Current pastor is Fr. Richard A. Matty.
