St. Tomas/St. Joseph (Kermit)

St. Joseph was established in 1950 for the Spanish speaking Catholic in Kermit. Fr. Gerhard Stakemiere was the first priest . The church was originally an old barracks chapel. In 1960 the members of St. Joseph decided to built a brick church and did so with God's help and their own hands. Bishop Sidney M. Metzger officially dedicated and blessed the church of St. Joseph the Worker on May 5, 1964.
St. Thomas. The first Catholic Services in Winkler County were conducted in 1932 in the Old Royal Neighbors Hall in Wink. In 1950 the Most Rev. Bishop Sidney M. Metzger asked Fr. Stakemiere to make his residence in Kermit as a new church would have to built. On July 24, 1950 the building of St. Thomas the Apostole church and Rectory was begun
